About Susan

BA(Hons), PgCert, PgDip, MSc, DProf (ongoing)

I have been in practice as a counsellor and psychotherapist for over 22 years working with a wide range of people and issues in a variety of contexts.

Experience and Qualifications

I am a highly experienced counsellor/psychotherapist. I have worked with a wide variety of people and issues in a number of settings such as a mental health charity, the NHS, private practice and significantly as a counsellor/psychotherapist in education counselling students and staff. I worked in Higher Education for seventeen years, providing a leadership role within a multi-disciplinary university counselling, wellbeing and mental health service, leading student counselling and managing a workplace counselling service.

I have also worked extensively with life crises, loss, grief, meaning or its lack, in life.

I have substantial experience in supervising the work of other therapists and counselling trainees and have learned much from others’ practice and from the experience of working with a diverse range of clients across a number of therapeutic approaches.

I have continued to develop as a therapist, as I am committed and passionate about what I do. I originally trained as an integrative counsellor/psychotherapist and have knowledge and training in a number of approaches, including person-centred, gestalt, psychodynamic, brief therapies, solution-focused therapy, CBT and third wave approaches. I can offer brief, mid or long-term counselling and psychotherapy.

I have particular experience in providing counselling and psychotherapy to those training or working in education and medical, health and social care professions.

Before training as a therapist, I worked for nine years in the arts and theatre. I have skills in helping people with performance and presentation fears (and ‘test’ anxiety), procrastination and perfectionism, and working through creative blocks in their work or life.

I have substantial experience of expressive/creative therapies and working with therapeutic writing for a range of issues, including trauma.
